This is a set of a lecture, a model, a practice, and a debrief, regarding negotiating with power, shared at LCN Pedagogy Convening on April 6th and 7th, 2024.
This is a video from LCN Pedagogy Convening on April 6th and 7th, 2024. It includes a mini lecture, three models, a debrief of the models, a practice in breakout rooms for participants, and a debrief of the exercise, regarding negotiating with power. The models were developed as a part of Harvard Kennedy School’s course in 2023, by Jake Waxman and Pedja Stojicic.
How do we engage with power and have a conversation with the authority figure whose decisions we are trying to change?
We sometimes confuse access to power, acknowledgement from the authority figure, or “support” from them as power. These common tendencies tend not to work:
- Convincing decision makers through compelling argument (the facts!)
- Confronting them unproductively (mean words will make it happen)
- Being very deferential to authority (whatever they think and are willing to do would just be so great!)
Then how can we negotiate with power in a strategic, effective way?
